Hey there, in this article i want to tell you about my experiences with Plex Media Server on the OUYA.
I didn’t write much in the last days, because there was not much to write about. I am still looking for the most convincing method to use my OUYA as a Media Center in my living room.
As I wrote in a recent post, i got pretty good results with the CM 10 custom rom described here.
But after installing the Plex App i got an error, which I was not able to cope with – every time i wanted to fast forward a movie – by the way that is the function, that enables one to resume a movie after a break, or on another device in PLEX – the app crashed.
That’s a no-go for me, so I decided to flash back the original firmware and by the way have a look on the other more or less custom roms for the OUYA.
Flashing back the stock rom is a pleasant avtivity, reboot to recovery by connecting the OUYA to my laptop, start cmd, adb devices, adb reboot recovery, format all partitions, sideload OUYA-stock.zip and voila, done.
I was even able to keep the custom recovery for further tests 😉
So let’s come to topic: PLEX on the OUYA – it is a delight. I didn’t know in first place, but a customized PLEX-app is allready published in the OUYA store. Its free and working very well – i didn’t experience any lags or other shortcommings with this configuration.
There is one little But though – since I invested in a receiver latetly, i wanted to have pure dts and dolby surround sound. That’s not possible at the moment, since Plex is recoding the sound before its send to the OUYA. The cause for that lies in the Android system the OUYA is build on.
At the same time it was possible to pass trough the not encoded audio bitstream on another Android based device, the Mele A2000, that I also own. So maybe there will be a way found. If you have more informations and knowledge on this topic, please share it in the comments section 😉
The best with PLEX is, that you don’t have to hack or modify your OUYA at all. Its all in the OUYA store.
There is also a file explorer in the store and you could bypass the lack of the Google Playstore by installing Aptoide from the browser. Just be sure not to install the bad apps from there.
In my experiance that is the best system for using the OUYA as a media center right now. You will still need the Plex Server though.
If you want to play movies locally, look for MX Player free on the Aptoide store or follow my tutorial here.
I also tried the OUYA stock plus rom from the xda developers forum for the OUYA console, but it didn’t work out well for me. The PLEX error occoured again – even it was the customized PLEX app from the OUYA store – and i was not really able to use the Google Playstore, which mostly likely was my mistake, but i didn’t tried to figure it out since the main goal – to bring PLEX fully to work on the OUYA – wouldn’t be solved that way.
Another one: the system fan on the OUYA is nerving me, becouse its so loud, when decoding movies. I will raplace it, since that seems not to be a really complicated task. Of course i will share my experiences with You in one of the next posts, until then,
