What is the OUYA game console?
The OUYA is a new kind of game console based on Googles Android operating system. It was funded by a kickstarter campain, closing August 9th 2012 with a then-record in funding a kickstarter campain of 8.596.474$! The official launch-date was June 25th 2013.
The aim of this “new kind of game console” is to bring you game-fun, you know from your mobile device. Therefore OUYA has launched its own appstore with games, adapted for the input-system of the consoles gamepad. The amount of available games is rising steadily.
For whom OUYA was designed?
Buying the OUYA console you shouldn’t expect the graphics of a modern game console, like the Playstation 4, or the XBOX One. The OUYA is definitely no GFX-monster. It’s rather a inexpensive alternative for the casual gamer. For the low price of 100$ (incl. one gamepad) you can have a lot of fun with this device. There is a wide range of game categories to satisfy every gamer’s taste. The games are free to test, for the full version you have to add a credit card number. This has been criticized by many early backers and potential buyers.
But being a game console is not the only thing the OUYA is usable for. Using the advantages of the open source Android operating system the OUYA can act as a perfect media center in your living room. The XMBC-project already announced support for the console.
So, even if you are not interested in actual gaming, the OUYA can be a good match, because of it’s little price, low energy consumption (1W in standby, 4,5W in use) and the support and new functions from the developer community.

The internal storage consists of a internal 8 GB eMMC flash memory, the dimensions of this little console is 75×75×82 mm.
The OUYA got 2 USB Ports, one standard port and a micro-USB port, to connect your console for hacking 🙂
The console is shipped with Android 4.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
The aim was to build a very comfortable controller. The outcome was not very satisfactory in the beginning 🙁
Most of the early reviewers complained about lags in the inputs while gaming. Fortunately the problems got solved until the shipping date, so the experience with the controller is pretty fine. The controller is a typical game pad with dual analogue sticks, a directional pad, 4 face buttons and pairs of back bumpers and triggers. A pretty nice feature is the touchscreen, build in the center of the controller.
The OUYA is thought to be a very hackable gaming console. The software is based on the Open Source Android operating system (on top with OUYAs own launcher). You can root your device without loosing your warranty.
You can also hardware-hack the OUYA console without sitting hours on the device. All you need is a regular phillips screwdriver to disassemble and re-assemble the device, which allows easy modding the console.
